Your household trash in Henderson is collected by Republic Services, and the price you already pay includes something a lot of residents never use: bulk pickup for items too big to fit in your trash bin.
It's genuinely useful. It's also governed by rules that aren't obvious until the truck drives past your pile and leaves it sitting there.
How bulk pickup actually works
Republic sends a third truck every other week specifically for bulk items: the things that don't fit inside your trash bin. It runs on the same day as your regular collection.
Which week is yours depends on your address. Republic publishes A/B week calendars for Henderson, so look yours up rather than guessing. Putting a pile out on the wrong week means it sits at the curb for a fortnight. Items need to be out early on collection morning, so the safest approach is the night before.
The short version
Items go curbside, nothing loose, nothing over six feet, and branches bundled under 50 pounds. Miss any of those and the pile stays.
The five rules that trip people up
- 1Nothing longer than six feetThis is the one that catches people mid-renovation. Long boards, fence panels, and carpet rolls have to be cut down before they'll be taken.
- 2No loose trash: everything must be containedA heap of debris on the curb isn't a bulk item. Bag it, box it, or bundle it.
- 3No protruding nails or screws in woodDemo lumber has to be de-nailed or the crew won't handle it. This is a safety rule and they don't bend it.
- 4Branches bundled, tied, and under 50 poundsA palo verde you dropped over a weekend is several bundles, not one pile.
- 5Soiled mattresses must be wrapped in plasticUnwrapped, it gets left, and a mattress that's sat at the curb through a Henderson afternoon isn't getting nicer.
Items also have to be at the curb. Crews don't come up the driveway, into the side yard, or through a gate. Whatever you want gone has to be out front.
Appliances have their own rules
Large appliances are accepted, but there are limits on how many go out at once. If you're clearing a whole kitchen, check with Republic before setting them all at the curb.
Refrigerators and freezers are the strict one: the refrigerant has to be professionally removed first, with the certification tag attached. Without that tag, it doesn't go. This isn't Republic being difficult. Handling refrigerant is federally regulated.
Worth knowing
Republic's transfer stations accept some appliances and electronics (ovens, microwaves, televisions and kitchen appliances) at no charge if you can haul them yourself, and refrigerators for a fee. Call 702-735-5151 to confirm current hours and what's accepted before you load up.
When bulk pickup isn't the answer
Bulk pickup is a good deal for one sofa or a broken washer. It stops working when:

The honest test: if you can get it to the curb yourself, it fits the rules, and you can wait for your week, use the bulk pickup you're already paying for. We'd rather tell you that than take your money for a job the city truck would have done free.
